What is Inhibitory Control?
Toddlers love stop and go games because they allow the child to practice control over their physical body and to revel in their mastery of this control.  One aspect of self-control is inhibitory control, or the ability to stop oneself and to wait.  Inhibitory control in important in social interactions because this skill makes taking turns easier for the child.

Benefits of Inhibitory Control:
Inhibitory control is about putting a space between an impulse or thought and the action.  The ability to choose one's actions wisely is like a muscle that needs exercising.  A simple stop and go activity like our song, Walk and Stop, or the well-known Freeze Dance, is a great way to exercise that muscle because it is hidden in an activity that your child is engaged in and thoroughly enjoys.  This practice can translate into the ability to take turns graciously or to choose to do their homework when they'd rather play a video game.

Practicing Inhibitory Control:

In Kindermusik, we provide many opportunities for movement in order for your child to practice the inhibitory control skills needed to navigate the physical world safely and easily.  being able to safely stop and start during activities is an important learned movement that transfers to many everyday situations.

With effort awareness, your child learns how much effort is required by their muscles to initiate. sustain, and stop movements.  With spatial awareness they learn to gauge the amount of space around them that they need in order to move freely.  Then your child learns to observe and anticipate the movements of others and control the movement of their own body so they can move safely.  With these skills, everything from dancing and playing with others to the more intricate movements of sports and driving a car become possible and effortless.
